THE CSIRO says future Australian oil and gas projects could be at risk from the impact of climate change on the country’s seabed.
According to the CSIRO, its predictions follow preliminary findings from a five year study of what could happen to the seabed as a result of global warming between 2000 and 2050.
The CSIRO claims in extreme climatic changes, many offshore oil and gas development sites would be susceptible to increased erosion.
The CSIRO says over 92% of Australia’s oil and gas resources lie offshore and will be produced from facilities connected to the seabed.
It claims the lack of knowledge of the magnitude and location of future seabed changes is potentially putting offshore infrastructures and platforms at risk.
