AMIRA has announced its plans to boost drilling and mining technologies with the development of a new specialised Cooperative Research Centre.
The group said has already received industry and researcher support of almost A$75 million and it is now looking to the Australian government to help create the centre.
The group said it expects a decision from the Australian Government’s Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research later this year.
The industry and academic consortium would focus on deep exploration innovations in particular, new drilling technologies.
AMIRA Research Director Joe Cucuzza said the centre would draw on the expertise of a range of leading research institutions under the guidance of major mining companies.
Principal industry partners include Barrick Gold, BHP Billiton, Boart Longyear, Gold Fields Australasia, Newcrest and Vale, each of which has committed up to $5.5 million.
